Sources & open-source credits

Sky Patch is an open-source astrophotography planner. Its geometry illustrates sky coverage, not the detail or brightness a particular exposure will capture.

Source code

Planetarium and astronomy

Stellarium Web Engine, © Stellarium Labs SRL and contributors, provides the planetarium, sky transforms and survey rendering under AGPL v3. Bundled sample sky data and fonts are from its upstream source. Astronomy Engine by Don Cross provides Sun calculations under its MIT licence. Roboto is by Google under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Deep-sky catalogue

OpenNGC by Mattia Verga and contributors: CC BY-SA 4.0. Sky Patch derives a browser catalogue from the main catalogue, addendum and contours; it simplifies outlines and adds a few familiar names. Source axes, position angles, photometric bands and unknown measurements are retained. Catalogue B-band surface brightness is not universally available for nebulae.

Survey imagery

Digitized Sky Survey — STScI/NASA, coloured and HEALPix processed by CDS. DSS2 colour tiles and cutouts are served by CDS, Strasbourg. Survey metadata · Full acknowledgement and captured terms · Original DSS image credits and terms.

The Digitized Sky Surveys were produced at the Space Telescope Science Institute under U.S. Government grant NAG W-2166, using photographic data from the Oschin Schmidt Telescope on Palomar Mountain and the UK Schmidt Telescope. Colour processing and HiPS database: CDS / CNRS / Université de Strasbourg. Service metadata identifies the HiPS database as ODbL-1.0; the original survey plate/image credits continue to apply.

Images are requested from CDS when you explore the map. They are not Mini exposures and do not predict telescope performance. Survey availability and colour coverage vary.

Equipment preset

DWARF Mini: 1920 × 1080 output, approximately 2.14° × 1.20° field of view (2.45° diagonal). Native mosaic maximum 1.8× in each overall dimension. DWARFLAB manual. Sky Patch is an independent project.

Offline object introductions

Location search and timezone detection

City search: Open-Meteo, using GeoNames data under CC BY 4.0. Search queries are sent to Open-Meteo only when you search.

Offline coordinate-to-timezone lookup: @photostructure/tz-lookup, CC0-1.0, with timezone-boundary-builder data. Coordinate lookups run on your device; borders are approximate. License.
